The first day of the MLB draft is tonight. The Pirates will have pick number seven, and there is another “expert” prediction. Joe Rivera of The Sporting News has the Bucs taking right hander Mick Abel out of Jesuit High in Oregon. The Bucs will also make the 31st overall selection, a competitive balance choice, tonight. Rounds two through five will be tomorrow.
The MLB players union has proposed an 89-game regular season while remaining adamant that they receive full prorated salaries. The proposal was sent yesterday electronically without a negotiating session. The latest proposal comes one day after management cut its proposed schedule from 82 games to 76. The union accepted MLB’s plan to expand the postseason from 10 teams to as many as 16. The players’ plan would have the World Series end in mid-to-late November, and players said they would accept MLB’s proposal to have the ability to shift postseason games to neutral sites.
