The IUP President’s Commission on Diversity and Inclusion has been working behind the scenes to advance positive change at IUP, and they are speaking out about the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis on May 25th.
Over the weekend, the Commission heard from IUP President Dr. Michael Driscoll, Vice President for Student Affairs Thomas Segar, the Chief Diversity and Inclusion officer Elise Glenn and borough police chief Justin Schawl, and after discussions, the commission said they stand behind the main statements made by each: That racism has no place at IUP or anywhere in the community. They also say they want to advance the cause of anti-racism through “raising up all voices, listening to racially marginalized voices, not putting the burden of work solely on people of color, and denouncing racism and the structures that enable it.”
The commission acknowledged that it will not be an issue that is resolved quickly, but will take a long-term commitment from the commission, the University and the Community.
