The PA Turnpike Commission announced yesterday that they would lay off 500 toll collectors and other toll workers as part of an effort to move the toll collections to an all-electronic system.
Toll collectors have not been working the turnpike since the start of the Coronavirus pandemic, according to Turnpike Commission CEO Mark Compton.
There will be no change for drivers who currently use E-Z Pass, but those who do not will have a picture taken of their license and a bill mailed to them to cover the cost of tolls.
The job losses will begin June 18th . The Turnpike Commission said that some health benefits will remain in place for two years.
