Indiana Borough Police Chief Justin Schawl addressed some announced rallies in Indiana Borough during last night’s Borough Council Agenda Prep Session.
The rallies are in the wake of the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis, Minnesota. One rally was scheduled to take place this afternoon with people marching from 4th and Philadelphia Street to the County Courthouse, and a second rally is scheduled for Sunday at the Courthouse.
During the meeting, Councilman Gerald Smith said he spoke with the original organizers of today’s event and said that the event had been cancelled, but there are still concerns in the community over the event, including social media rumors of people coming to the county for the protest itself.
Schawl said that he feels there is no credibility to those rumors.
Other social media posts have been asking people from outside groups to protect businesses in the Downtown area. Schawl said that kind of support is not appreciated.
Schawl added that Indiana Borough Police will be ready for any situation that may arise and that the police department would support any peaceful gathering in the community.
