The Pennsylvania Department of Labor and Industry has released the latest unemployment statistics for April and the full impact that Coronavirus and the related closure of businesses had on the area is now coming to light.
The seasonally adjusted unemployment rate for Indiana County in April increased 9.3 percentage points to 16.0 percent. That is the highest unemployment rate for the county since June of 1983. Statewide and national unemployment rates saw similar increases as the statewide rate also went up 9.3 percentage points to 15.1 percent. The national rate went up 10.3 percentage points to 14.7 in April.
The total number of non-farm jobs in Indiana County dropped by 5,300 to 27,000 in the month of April, which represents a drop of 16.4 percent, and is also the lowest level on record since 1990. Jobs in all super-sectors in the county were down from March, with the largest decline seen in leisure and hospitality in Indiana County and across the state as well.
