The 11-seeded Pitt Panthers open play in the NCAA Midwest Regional this afternoon at Greensboro Coliseum against number six seed Iowa State. The Panthers beat Mississippi State on Tuesday to qualify for the tournament, where they meet a Cyclones team that has had rough time of it since January 1st, going only 6-11 in the rugged Big 12.
Pitt coach Jeff Capel says Iowa State relies on a smothering, aggressive defense and Pitt, a three-point oriented offense, will have to protect the basketball.
Pitt’s Federiko Federiko is a question mark going into the game. Capel had no update on his center’s sore knee, which caused him to miss Tuesday’s win over Mississippi State. Pitt’s Blake Hinson is a transfer from Iowa State, but he shut down any questions about his time there during yesterday’s media event. Hinson never saw game action in two seasons in Ames, Iowa.
Today’s game tips off at 3:10. We’re on the air at 2:40 on WCCS.
NCAA
