A western Pennsylvania candy maker has expanded operations into Indiana County.
Dan Smith’s Candies has opened up shop in the Sgro’s building at the corner of 8th and Philadelphia Street, and yesterday was their official ribbon cutting. The shop will feature chocolate and candy creations of all kinds ranging from peanut butter meltaways to dark chocolate treats, and even some savory items. Dan Smith’s also puts together gift baskets, and also offer candy for fundraising sales.
Joe Scarnati and his wife Amy own the candy franchise that has expanded now into five stores. Scarnati said that getting into the candy business was a matter of preserving a Western PA tradition. Scarnati had been a life-long fan of Dan Smith’s Candies and when he heard the Smith family was looking to sell the business, the Scarnati’s purchased it. Since then, the Scarnatis have expanded to five locations in Clarion, Brockway, DuBois, the factory store in Brookville, and now in Indiana.
On top of the chocolates and candies, Dan Smith’s also offers unique gift items. Dan Smith’s Candies started in Brookville in 1946, when the original Dan Smith started selling ice cream from his home. Seven years later, he would expand into candy by starting to make coconut and peanut clusters.
