Coach Jeff Capel and his Pitt Panthers are in Greensboro, North Carolina preparing for their game tomorrow afternoon against Iowa State in the NCAA Midwest Regional. Pitt played its way into the field of 64 with a one-point win over Mississippi State on Tuesday.
Pitt tips off with Iowa State tomorrow at 3:10. Capel may have to face the 6th seeded Cyclones without his starting center. Federiko Federiko has a knee injury that kept him out of Tuesday’s game and Capel said afterward that he “might” be able to play tomorrow, but how much and how effective he could be is unknown. Freshman Guillermo Diaz Graham and his twin brother, Jorge, filled in capably for Federiko. Capel says the Panthers will battle no matter who is on the floor for them, or against them.
The two remaining slots in the 64-team tournament were filled last night as Fairleigh Dickinson blew out Texas Southern 84-61 and Arizona State eased past Nevada 98-73.
Sixteen games are on today’s NCAA first round schedule, with number-1 seeds Kansas, Alabama and Houston all in action.
