Pitt football began its spring practice workouts yesterday. Among the highlights was the first workout for new transfer quarterbacks Phil Jurkovec and Christian Veilleux, and the beginning of the process of replacing five big-name starters on defense. All-American defensive end Calijah Kancey is gone, as are fellow end Habakkuk Baldonado, stalwart linebacker SirVocea Dennis, and safeties Brandon Hill and Erick Hallett.
Defensive coordinator Randy Bates says there are a lot of opportunities for guys who got their first taste of big-time college football subbing for opt-outs in Pitt’s 37-35 win over UCLA in the Sun Bowl.
Like all college teams, Pitt is permitted 15 total spring practices, including the Blue-Gold game on April 15th.
