Pirates team president Travis Williams announced yesterday that the team is furloughing some non-baseball operations employees, starting June 1st. The workers will still receive medical benefits. Baseball ops employees will receive pay cuts.
Major League Baseball’s players union expects to receive an economic proposal from the owners regarding a shortened season by early next week, according to MLB Network.
The players have already said they will not accept any proposal that calls for a 50-50 split of revenue, while the owners would be opposed to paying prorated player salaries above the projected 82-game schedule. The players’ association has reviewed the owners’ 67-page proposal for starting the season and they have a lot of objections. They don’t like banning in-stadium shower use, getting dressed away from the stadium, and the proposal to test for coronavirus “multiple times per week.” The players want more testing.
Other protocols that are unlikely to meet the players’ approval are sitting in the stands instead of dugouts, each bullpen pitcher having his own personal baseballs to throw, and the owner’s provisions for players, coaches, and family members who are at risk because of underlying health issues.
