The Pitt Panthers open play in the ACC Tournament this afternoon against Georgia Tech, a 61-60 winner over Florida State yesterday in the first round. Ja’von Franklin hit a free throw with three-tenths of a second left in the game to give the Yellow Jackets the win. Pitt beat Georgia Tech twice in the regular season, by scores of 71-60 and 76-68, but the Yellow Jackets have won four games in a row and the Panthers have lost two in a row.
Coach Jeff Capel, the ACC Coach of the Year, says Pitt is eager to get on the court.
All-ACC first team guard Jamarius Burton says the Panthers, who are stocked with transfer players who have been in conference tournaments and even the NCAA March Madness before, will rely on lessons learned in past postseasons.
Today’s game tips off at 2:30 from Greensboro Coliseum in North Carolina. The pregame airs at 2 on WCCS.
Five more teams punched their ticket to the NCAA Tournament on Tuesday. Gonzaga, Oral Roberts, Northern Kentucky and Charleston all earned automatic qualifying bids. Fairleigh Dickinson earned the bid from the Northeast Conference despite losing in the final to Merrimack, which is ineligible for this year’s NCAA Tournament.
