Pittsburgh native and former Pirate Art Howe is in intensive care with Covid-19.
The former Astros and Athletics manager is 73 years old. He says he is improving since being taken to the hospital by ambulance on Tuesday. Howe said that he can be released after he goes without registering a fever for at least 24 hours. According to Howe, he suffered chills starting on May 3rd and then experienced extreme fatigue and a loss of his sense of taste.
Former Astros star Bob Watson, a two-time All-Star as a player who later became the first black general manager to win a World Series, has died from kidney disease at the age of 74. Watson was the GM of the Yankees when they won the Series in 1996. He hit over .300 four times and drove in at least 100 runs twice in his Major League career, and also holds the distinction of scoring the 1 millionth run in major league history, on May 4th, 1975.
Watson finished his with a .295 career batting average, 184 home runs and 989 RBIs.
Major League Baseball is working on a plan to start the season amid the coronavirus pandemic, but Rays star pitcher Blake Snell says he won’t play unless he’s getting paid in full. In late March, MLB and the players’ association agreed to a deal in which the players would be paid prorated shares of their salaries based on the portion of the 162-game season that is actually played. The teams now want a 50-50 split of revenue instead.
