In Spring Training baseball yesterday, the Pirates won a game, but may have lost Andrew McCutchen. Joe Block reports on the game against the Twins.
McCutchen was hit on the hand by a pitch that the umpires ruled had hit his bat, making it a foul ball. He immediately left the field to get his hand tended to. He is still being evaluated.
The Pirates will play their second night game of the spring this evening against the Yankees in Tampa. Right-hander Luis Ortiz will start the game for the Bucs.
The roster for the Pirates and the rest of the Major League teams will thin a bit this week as players report to their respective nation’s teams for the World Baseball Classic, which gets underway with pool play on Wednesday. Four Pirates who are on the 40-man roster will play in the WBC. All are pitchers, including David Bednar, who will play for the USA, Roansy Contreras, who along with Jarlin Garcia will be members of the Dominican Republic’s team, and Duane Underwood Jr., who will play for Puerto Rico. The WBC championship game will be on March 21st at loanDepot Park in Miami.

The Phillies’ Bryce Harper says he will join his team in Clearwater, Florida on Wednesday. The 30-year-old outfielder is coming off elbow surgery and is expected to be Philadelphia’s designated hitter for most of the season as he continues his recovery.
Former All-Star infielder Mike Moustakas has agreed to a minor-league contract with the Colorado Rockies. The 34-year-old Moustakas played only 78 games last season before being released by the Reds.
