The state yesterday announced $5 million in funding for school safety through the Safe Schools Initiative Targeted Grant program. The money will be shared by nearly 140 schools, police departments, and municipalities, and some of it will be coming to Indiana County.
Two districts are going to get equipment funding. Indiana Area is in line for $5,000 and Penns Manor will be receiving $18,926.
Two districts will receive funding for safety personnel. Marion Center will get $40,000 and United, $26,841, for school police officers.
The safety equipment funding for Indiana and Penns Manor can be used for student, staff and visitor identification systems; metal detectors; protective lighting; surveillance equipment; special emergency communications equipment; electronic locksets; deadbolts and theft control devices; and training in the use of security-related technology.
The personnel grants for Marion Center and United are for training and compensation costs. Each district will receive a lesser amount next year. Under the program, schools are not eligible to apply if they received funding for personnel the previous year.
