On the first day of the NFL Combine in Indianapolis, new Steelers general manager Omar Khan spoke about a variety of team issues, including free agency, the draft, and his roster.
Khan says he wants to keep Mitch Trubisky as Kenny Pickett’s backup quarterback, and he also hopes he can sign linebacker Alex Highsmith to a long term contract, along with cornerback Cam Sutton. While Highsmith still has one year left on his rookie contract, Sutton is one of a number of Steelers who are unrestricted free agents. Others are defensive linemen Larry Ogunjobi, Chris Wormley, and Tyson Alualu, linebackers Robert Spillane and Devin Bush, and safeties Terell Edmunds and Damontae Kazee.
Khan says he is enjoying his new job with the Steelers and looking forward to getting a look at the incoming NFL rookies at the combine.
Khan says he has options at quarterback and flexibility with Pickett on a rookie contract. Trubisky has one year more on his contract and Mason Rudolph is a free agent who may look elsewhere for a chance to play, but the GM says for Rudolph, “the door’s still open.”
