The NHL could be looking to hold its entry-level draft before the current season resumes. According to TSN, the league said in a memo that it would need a month to get ready for a virtual draft, meaning the earliest it could occur is in early June. The memo reportedly states the benefits of an early draft. There are however questions and concerns regarding the status of draft picks and draft order that are tied to a season that has not yet been finished. The league is currently on pause amid the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.
While the NHL is outlining a plan that could have players back in their home rinks by mid-May and the season restarting in July, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said non-Canadian resident players would have to follow quarantine protocols if they join their teams in Canada.
The NBA is indefinitely postponing its Draft Lottery and Combine. The lottery determines the draft order, while the combine gives players eligible for the draft a chance to impress the teams. Both events were originally set for later this month in Chicago. The NBA Draft is scheduled for June 25th in Brooklyn.
