The weather Saturday into Sunday has caused widespread power outages and kept firefighters busy with downed trees and power lines.
One of the victims was the 42-foot Christmas tree in downtown Indiana, which was toppled by high winds. Greg Van Horn of the Indiana Christmas Tree Growers was inspecting the scene Sunday morning and said it did not appear that the tree itself was broken or damaged substantially. The huge cement standards anchoring it were dragged about six feet and the plywood base on which it was mounted was broken. The falling tree did not hit any buildings, and it does not appear that the streetlight pole was damaged.
Reports were issued for utility lines down across Route 85 in Washington Township, Route 286 in Westmoreland County just outside Saltsburg, Route 580 in Green Township, Nowrytown Road in Conemaugh Township, and Nashville Road in Grant Township. There was also a call for a tree blocking Route 286 in Conemaugh Township, and another tree was reported down early Sunday morning on Route 85 in South Mahoning Township.
