The Heritage Conference was only guaranteed one team making it into the District 6 Double-A Boys semifinals, and that’s all they ended up with, despite five teams entering play last night in contention to move on.
The one team advancing is top seed United, which beat fellow Heritage Conference opponent Homer-Center. Todd Marino has the recap.
United coach Matt Rodkey was relieved to get a win and to clinch a spot in the state tournament.
Rodkey knew Homer-Center would give his team a tough night.
United’s starters have been playing basketball together since elementary school, and Rodkey says you can see it in the way they play.
United wins its 23rd game of the season, tying the school record for victories in a season with the ’92-93 conference championship team that finished 23-5.
Mount Union topped Cambria Heights, 69-63, in overtime to advance to the semis and play United on Saturday.
In the bottom half of the Double-A draw, second seed Southern Huntingdon knocked off Northern Cambria, 50-38. They will play West Branch, a 66-38 winner over West Shamokin, in the other semi on Saturday.
The District 6 playoffs continue tonight with six Heritage Conference girls teams in action.
Girls Triple-A third seed River Valley opens its playoff run, playing host to number six Tyrone on Cat Country 106.3 FM and streaming online at CatCountry1063fm.com.
In Double-A, girls top seed Bellwood Antis plays number nine Bishop McCort. Second seed Portage will welcome visiting number ten Marion Center. Third seed Penns Manor will play host to number six United on U92.5 FM and streaming online at U92radio.com. And fifth-seeded Homer-Center travels to number four Southern Huntingdon on WCCS FM 101.1 and AM 1160 and streaming online at WCCSradio.com.
