The Homer-Center school board made various personnel decisions and narrowly approved a spiritual athletic club. Also, a now-former board member was recognized.
On a motion by Fred Hayes seconded by James McLoughlin, the board voted on the formation of a Fellowship of Christian Athletes club for any interested students. While the organization was praised for its focus on character building and leadership skills, Justin Smyers, Michael Bertig, and Logan Dellafiora also expressed concern that the organization’s statements of faith include the condemnation of non-Christians and the opposition to same-sex marriage. Said Dellafiora:
“As I stated, I don’t oppose the mission of the club, I think it does great things… What I oppose is the part of the mission statement that condemns gay marriage… I mean, we have students in our school that identify in the LGBTQ community.”
The motion passed 4-3 with Gerry Bertig abstaining.
In other news, various personnel decisions were made, including the hiring of a substitute nurse, basketball coaches for the upcoming season, and extra musicians for the upcoming Annie musical. The board also accepted the retirements of custodians Lola Skoff, (who served Homer-Center for 10 years), and Wilbert Wolfgang (19 years).
Elementary Principal Michael Stofa took time to highlight the importance of food allergy awareness, and offered a reminder that any party treats sent in with students must be store-bought and unopened.
Additionally, Julie Rado was not present, but was nonetheless honored for her 8 years on the board. She was also a member of the ARIN IU and Academic Committees.
Robert Valyo was welcomed to the board of directors.
Mason Sisko (Grade 4) and Franklin Maratita (Grade 10) received Wildcat Recognition Awards, and Drew Hurd is the Kiwanis Senior of the Month. Congratulations!
