Earlier this week, the state Department of Environmental Protection started it’s black fly suppression program for the year.
The efforts will include aerial and backpack spraying along 1700 stream miles in 35 counties in the state, including spraying along the Conemaugh River and Kiskiminetas River in Indiana County. The frequency of the spraying operations will depend on weather and biological conditions. The idea of the spraying is to reduce the presence of an insect that is seen as a nuisance to people who are trying to enjoy these areas. The DEP’s spray is made with Bti, a naturally occurring bacterium to treat four specific black fly species.
The DEP will notify the community if there will be any spraying going on in the community.
