State Senator and Senate Republican Leader Joe Pittman has issued a response to Governor Josh Shapiro’s recent news concerning the death penalty in Pennsylvania.
In a tweet, Shapiro announced that he will not issue any execution warrants during his tenure as Governor, and that any execution warrant that goes before him will get a reprieve each time. He is also asking the state’s general assembly to send him a bill that would abolish the death penalty in Pennsylvania for good.
Pittman said that the state house and senate learned of this move just minutes before the tweet was posted. He called the move “a rash approach to an issue of this magnitude” and said that any changes that closes access to a method or element of punishment “must appropriately consider the families of murder victims and the critical perspective of law enforcement.”
Pittman also said that one of the Senate Republican Caucus’ ongoing priorities has been protecting society while implementing meaningful criminal justice reforms, and that topic will be up for discussion in the senate in the near future.
