On the first day of workouts in Bradenton yesterday, the main topic was the Bryan Reynolds trade demand, with manager Derek Shelton saying Reynolds will not be a distraction and Reynolds himself saying he is open to staying in Pittsburgh if he gets a fair contract. The outfielder is in the final year of a two-year deal signed last season at far below market value. He said he wants a long-term contract that is fair to both the player and the team.
Shelton said Reynolds and other position players are in camp early and eager to play ball.
Shelton says Reynolds is a pro who will give the Pirates everything he can, as always.
The Pirates have brought in a number of new pitchers this offseason, including veterans such as left-hander Rich Hill, who will turn 43 next month. Shelton says the Spring Training pitching plan will look different this year.
The Pirates’ full squad will report on Monday. The first exhibition game will be against Toronto on Saturday, February 25th. The first game on WCCS will be on Monday the 27th against the Phillies.
