CBS Sports is spending its down time reflecting on the past, choosing an all-time team for every Major League franchise, and they’ve released the Pirates’ lineup.
CBS’ Matt Snyder picked this bunch (and he clearly doesn’t know much about the Bucs…or baseball).
Jason Kendall is the catcher, with Willie Stargell at first base, Bill Mazeroski at second, and Honus Wagner at shortstop. That all makes sense.
In the outfield, Snyder readily admits he wanted Barry Bonds on the team, and with Ralph Kiner blocking him in left field, he put Bonds in center, where he played all of one season, his rookie year. the next season, Andy Van Slyke arrived and Bonds (with his weak left arm) was shunted off to left. Snyder believes Bonds deserves the spot over Andrew McCutchen, Lloyd “Little Poison” Waner, who is in the Hall of Fame and hit .317 in 17 seasons with the Bucs in center field, Omar Moreno, and Van Slyke.
Snyder’s starting pitchers are Bob Friend, Vernon Law, John Candelaria, and Dock Ellis. And his closer is Kent Tekulve.
