TSN’s Pierre LeBrun reports that the NHL players’ union has voted to delay their final paycjecks of the season, in an effort to the league and the NHLPA time to come to an agreement on current and future salary cap issues. The two sides are already negotiating on a new collective bargaining agreement, and Saturday’s move allows them time to avoid a salary cap drop of 25 to 40 percent next season. The salary cap is based in part on revenues each season, and this year’s revenues have been devastated by the stoppage of the season due to Covid-19.
It may also give them time to figure out compensation for the resumption of play, should that occur with the Stanley Cup playoffs only. NHL players are not paid for the playoffs.
