Governor Tom Wolf has issued an executive order to authorize the early release of up to 1800 inmates from state prisons over concerns of Covid-19.
The executive order states that those released will go to halfway houses or home confinement, and that could start as soon as Tuesday. The inmates released are nonviolent offenders who are within nine months of their scheduled release or within 12 months for those considered at a high risk for coronavirus. Wolf’s order also states that the department of corrections will discuss each eligible inmate with the courts, along with the state and county district attorney’s offices.
Some may not be eligible for release due to challenges involving health care or behavioral health treatment, as well as housing availability and food security.
