After Governor Wolf announced the cancellation of school for the rest of the school year, the PIAA announced that they have cancelled the rest of the sports schedule for the school year.
The winter sports championship season included the previously suspended class 2A swimming championships and the state basketball tournament. In a statement, PIAA executive director Dr. Robert Lombardi said that the decision to cancel the remaining sports season was a difficult one, but “the board’s decision reflects a steadfast priority of keeping our student-athletes, officials and member schools’ staffs and their communities safe, while following the guidelines provided by the Governor, the Department of Health and the Department of Education.”
Seventeen other state high school athletic associations have decided to cancel the rest of their seasons. The PIAA Board of Directors will meet in the next few months to address any concerns that arise from their members. While the association hopes to start their summer program on July 1st, they feel it is still too early to make that call.
