Today is Election Day, and for this general election, several county-wide offices will be decided along with some state-wide judicial offices.
On the ballot for the general election are races for Supreme Court Justice, judges for Superior Court and for Commonwealth Court. On the county level, one of the races that has received a lot of attention is for a vacant seat on the Court of Common Pleas. Patrick Dougherty and Mike Clark are running against each other for the seat made vacant by the retirement of Judge Carol Hanna in 2016. Also, Christopher Welch is running for the Magisterial District Judge seat in Clymer, and while he won the nomination from both parties in the primary election, Adam Lightcap is running a write-in campaign for that seat.
Two row offices are being contested in this election as well. One is the Register of Deeds/Recorder of Wills/Clerk of Orphans Court, with incumbent Patty Streams-Warman running against current Indiana Borough Council Member James Smith, Jr. The Treasurer’s office is also being contested, as Denise Jennings-Doyle is running against Kimberly McCullough.
One other race of note is the Indiana School Board race, which was a hotly contested race during the primary due to the Ben Franklin Elementary Project issues. The five who made it to the ballot ran on an anti-project platform, and since then, the project has been stopped completely. While five candidates are listed on the ballot, Kenneth Ault, who was one of the five who ran on the anti-project platform, dropped out of the race before election officials could change the ballot. Several other municipal races are on the ballot.
Polls will remain open until 8:00 PM.
