The Pittsburgh Penguins had a chance to gain ground on the Washington Capitals Saturday but lost to the Caps, 5-2, at PPG Paints Arena.
The Capitals and Philadelphia Flyers, tied for first place in the Metropolitan Division, held a two-point edge on the Pens prior to the game.
Washington jumped out to a three-goal lead in the first period and Pittsburgh never recovered.
Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin scored for the Pens in the third period.
