Losers of two straight games and eight of their last ten, the injury-depleted Penguins return to the ice tonight at PPG Paints Arena, sitting in sixth place in the Metro Division and fading fast.
The Pens played Saturday night’s loss to Carolina without Kris Letang, Tristan Jarry, Jeff Petry, Josh Archibald, Ryan Poehling, and Marcus Pettersson. Forward Danton Heinen sat out the second half of the game, but the Penguins did not announce whether that was due to injury or a coach’s decision.
The team has called up forward Jonathan Gruden from Wilkes-Barre/Scranton in advance of tonight’s game against Anaheim. He was acquired in 2020 in the trade of goaltender Matt Murray to Ottawa but has never played with the Penguins.
Coach Mike Sullivan says the Penguins are scuffling.
The Pens’ power play has clearly struggled with the absence of Letang, who has not played yet in January. Sullivan says they need to simplify their approach.
Tonight’s game faces off at 7. The airtime on 92.5 FM U92 is at 6.
