Another bridge in Indiana County will be named in honor of a local veteran.
State Representative Jim Struzzi has submitted legislation to name the bridge that carries Five Points Road over Crooked Creek as the Sgt. Carl Roof Bridge. Roof is a native of Armstrong Township and served the U.S. Army in World War II. On September 6th, 1944, Roof was captured by the German Army and was a prisoner of war for 11 months before he made it back to the United States. Struzzi called him a hero, saying “His actions, and those of his brothers in arms, successfully defeated tyranny and allowed us to remain a free world.”
Roof, who is 97 years old, now lives near the bridge in Armstrong Township.
