The Pitt Panthers led Duke by 8 points with 14:08 left in the game but then they went cold, going six minutes, eleven seconds without a point as the Blue Devils surged ahead and went on to win the game at Cameron Indoor Stadium, 77-69.
Duke dominated on the glass, outrebounding Pitt, 51-28, including 24 offensive rebounds that enabled them to overcome a poor shooting night.
Panthers coach Jeff Capel says Pitt fell apart in the second half because they couldn’t deal with Duke size and athleticism.
Pit was led by Jamarius Burton, who scored 16 points. Nelly Cummings had 14, Nike Sibande 11, and Blake Hinson 10. The Blue Devils’ 7-foot freshman sensation Kyle Filipowski poured in a game-high 28.
Capel says the ACC is proving once again how tough a league it is.
Pitt returns to action on Saturday afternoon at Georgia Tech.
