Leroy Penrose, Jr., 81, of Blairsville, PA, died on Saturday, February 15, 2020 at Beacon Ridge in Indiana, PA.
The son of Leroy T. and Eva (Lamine) Penrose, he was born on March 7, 1938 in Robinson, West Wheatfield Twp., Indiana Co., PA.
Leroy married Joann M. (Betts) Penrose on June 14, 1957 and they shared over sixty years of marriage together until her death on November 18, 2017.
He was a member of the Army National Guard during peacetime from 1955 until 1963 earning the rank of PFC.
Leroy’s career included working for Gene Jones as a truck driver. As a member of the United Mine Workers of America he worked as a coal miner at the Florence & R& P mines. Leroy also was employed as a school bus driver for United School District.
He loved spending time with his beloved dog, Mitch, going hunting, gardening; mushroom hunting and hiking.
Leroy is survived by his son: Kevin Penrose and wife, Patricia of Glen Campbell, PA, his granddaughter: Melissa Penrose and fiancé Joshua Smith of Indiana, PA; his siblings: Alma Jean Ayers and husband, Ronald “Roy” of Colorado; Jerry Penrose and wife Faye of Wilpen, PA; Nancy Wagner and husband Omer, of Robinson, PA; Gary Penrose and wife, Sandy of Coudersport, PA; Connie Gardner and husband, Ron of Blairsville, PA; his sister-in-law, Beverly Penrose of Greensburg, PA and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Joann; his brother, Irvin Penrose and his much loved dog, Smoke.
Family and friends will be received from 6-8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, February 18, 2020 at the Rairigh Funeral Home, Ltd. in Hillsdale, where an 11:00 a.m. funeral service with military honors will be held on Wednesday, February 19, 2020. Pastor Bob White will officiate. Interment will be at the Germany Lutheran Cemetery in West Wheatfield Twp., Indiana Co., PA.
