The Pirates yesterday officially signed 42-year-old left-hander Rich Hill to a one-year, $8 million contract. He was 8-7 with a 4.27 ERA in 26 starts for the Red Sox last year. He said he had lots of offers but he wanted to bring his veteran experience to the Bucs, and he likes reconnecting with Pirates’ GM Ben Cherington, who he knew from Boston. Hill has played for eleven other MLB teams.
To clear a roster spot for Hill, the Pirates designated right-hander Zach Thompson for assignment. Thompson was one of the three players the Pirates got in a trade for Jacob Stallings in the offseason last year.
