A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Friday for an 18-year-old Armagh woman accused of permitting a two-year-old child to use a vaping device last month in the New Florence area.
Berkley Noel Sutton of Shellbark Road in East Wheatfield Township is charged with felony endangering the welfare of children for the January 9th incident at a home along Jan-L Street in Saint Clair Township.
At the time of the incident, police said that a 17-year-old Seward girl was babysitting the child, who had taken the Juul vaping device from a nightstand and attempted to use it. He tried and succeeded a second time and the two young women failed to stop him, instead recording it on a phone and posting it to Snapchat. Someone saw the video and called the Safe2SaySomething tip line to report it. The child’s parents were not aware of what had happened until the video came to light. The vaping device contained only a three percent solution of nicotine.
The 17-year-old girl has not been publicly identified. She and Sutton are students at United High School, according to a school district release at the time of the incident.
Sutton’s hearing on Friday is scheduled for 9 AM before District Judge Denise Thiel in Ligonier. She is free on her own recognizance.
