As the US Congress is being sworn in today, so are the elected members of the PA House of Representatives.
The members of the PA House are being sworn in as we speak, including State Representative Jim Struzzi, who will start his third term of office representing the 62nd district. After that, an election of the house speaker is expected but that may not be as easy as it has been in the past.
Democrats won 102 seats to the Republican Party’s 101 in the November election, but there has been a death and two resignations, taking the Democratic number down to 99. State Representative Anthony DeLuca died a month before the election, and he could not be replaced on the ballot. Meanwhile, Summer Lee and Austin Davis have resigned to take their positions of U.S. congresswoman and Lt. Governor-elect, respectively.
Two people have announced intentions to run for House Speaker: Democrat Joanna McClinton of Philadelphia and Republican Valerie Gaydos of Allegheny County. The election of the Speaker is important as the party that controls the chamber can control what legislation can come to the floor for debate.
