Two people now face charges of drug possession following a traffic stop in Armstrong Township.
State Police say that on January 29th at 12:22 PM, a trooper from the Indiana barracks pulled over an SUV in the 100 block of Laurel Road in Shelocta for some summary traffic violations, including driving too slowly, driving in the middle of the road and failing to signal a left turn.
When they spoke with the driver, the trooper smelled burnt marijuana in the vehicle. When the passengers were searched, 27-year-old Nafis Hurt of McKeesport was found to be in possession of a package of marijuana blunts, and 39-year-old Elizabeth McCullough of Indiana had 19 stamp bags of suspected heroin in her purse. A scale with suspected drug residue and a pill bottle with three pills inside it was found on the rear floorboards. Another passenger in the vehicle also claimed that Hurt threw a package of drugs to McCullough as they were sitting in the vehicle.
When police searched McCullough further, they found her in possession of 523 stamp bags of suspected heroin packaged in bricks and buns, along with a plastic baggie containing a 22-gram rock of suspected crack cocaine.
Both Hurt and McCullough were arraigned and are in Indiana County Jail in lieu of $150,000 each. They face charges of possession with intent to deliver, possession of a controlled substance and of drug paraphernalia.
Preliminary hearings are set for February 11th.
