IUP has announced the date for the groundbreaking for their new math and science building.
The university has announced that groundbreaking ceremonies for the John J. and Char Kopchick College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics building will be held on May 6th along the North Walk on the edge of the Oak Grove. The building would replace Weyandt, Walsh and Leonard Hall.
While Leonard Hall was removed in 2018, Walsh Hall would be demolished before the start of construction and Weyandt would be demolished after construction on Kopchick Hall is finished. The new 100,000 square foot building will be located on Oakland Avenue and will feature a greenhouse, planetarium, outdoor garden and classroom area.
The project is expected to cost $90 million. $23 million of that came from the Kopchicks, who made the largest single gift to the University for this project.
It is expected to open in Spring of 2022.
