A motions hearing is scheduled today for 20-year-old Brady DiStefano of Johnstown, who is charged with killing his former IUP fraternity brother during a fight last February.
DeStefano is charged with criminal homicide and aggravated assault in the strangulation death of 20-year-old Caleb Zweig of Rockville, Maryland. An argument between the two Phi Delta Theta fraternity brothers turned into a fight, and DiStefano claimed that Zweig pulled him to the ground. A witness pulled him off the unconscious victim and provided medical care until ambulance personnel took over. Zweig died early the next morning at the Indiana Regional Medical Center.
On September 1st, DiStefano’s attorney filed omnibus pretrial motions in the case, and Judge William Martin ordered today’s evidentiary hearing. On the 22nd, the district attorney filed objections to the motions and three days later, DiStefano’s attorney filed another motion, for disclosure of evidence which might exonerate his client. That motion will be part of today’s hearing as well.
DiStefano is no longer a student at IUP. He remains free on $50,000 bond.
