The Penguins were never in their game last night against the New York Islanders. Paul Steigerwald recaps the disappointing effort.
An angry coach Mike Sullivan said the Penguins were not ready to play.
Sullivan liked the way goalie Tristan Jarry battled despite the team’s defensive failures. Jarry stopped 38 of 43 shots.
Defenseman Brian Dumoulin says the Penguins weren’t covering the basics very well.
Forward Jeff Carter says the Pens weren’t ready to play.
Defenseman Chad Ruhwedel left the game early in the second period with an undisclosed injury. He had collided with the Islanders’ Oliver Wahlstrom late in the first period on a play in which Wahlstrom was injured and did not return.
The Pens also played without forwards Josh Archibald and Ryan Poehling, who remain out with undisclosed injuries, and without defenseman Jeff Petry, who is on long-term injured reserve and not eligible to return until January 8th. Defenseman Mark Friedman had been recalled earlier in the day after being sent down to Wilkes-Barre/Scranton in a salary cap maneuver on Friday.
The Penguins get a shot at redemption tonight when they return to PPG Paints Arena to take on the Detroit Red Wings. The airtime on 92.5 FM U92 and the U92 Sportschannel is 6 o’clock, with faceoff shortly after 7.
