Pitt offensive coordinator Frank Cignetti Jr. met with the media yesterday in El Paso as the Panthers continue preparations for Friday’s Sun Bowl against UCLA.
Cignetti has been preparing backup quarterback Nick Patti to make the start on Friday after Kedon Slovis transferred to BYU. He says Patti has the support of the entire team.
Cignetti says he is very familiar with UCLA and it should be fun on Friday.
Pitt’s record-setting kicker, Sam Scarton, is not in El Paso. He graduated this month and has a new job starting in February, so he chose to sit out the bowl game. Ben Sauls will handle the kicking with punter Caleb Junko as his backup.
In college football bowl action yesterday, Buffalo trimmed Georgia Southern, 23-21 in the Camellia Bowl; Memphis trounced Utah State, 38-10 in the First Responders Bowl; East Carolina walloped Coastal Carolina, 53-29 in the Birmingham Bowl; and Wisconsin got by Oklahoma State, 24-17 in the Guaranteed Rate Bowl.
The bowl schedule today includes the Military Bowl in Annapolis, Maryland, where Central Florida battles Duke at 2 o’clock; the Liberty Bowl in Memphis, with Kansas playing Arkansas at 5:30; the Holiday Bowl in San Diego, kicking off at 8 between Oregon and North Carolina, and the Texas Bowl in Houston, with Texas Tech meeting Ole Miss at 9 o’clock.
