Cold weather is expected to hit our area today, and that could make things dangerous for drivers and pedestrians.
The National Weather Service has issued a winter weather advisory for our area until 1:00 PM, along with a wind advisory and a wind chill warning. The wind chill warning ends at noon tomorrow, with the wind advisory ending tomorrow morning at 7:00 PM. Winds are expected to reach 20 to 30 mph, with gusts up to 50 miles an hour in our area, and that could blow around unsecured objects and blow tree limbs and power lines down. Areas of blowing snow could reduce visibility, and the freezing temperatures could make roads slick with ice in very short order.
The wind will also make the air feel dangerously cold. AccuWeather meteorologist Jeff Nordeen said it can affect people very quickly with frostbite and hypothermia.
The National Weather Service says to avoid outside activities if possible during the wind chill warning and to be careful when walking on stairs sidewalks and driveways that could be icy or slippery. Drivers are also asked to be mindful of roads that freeze quickly, including Bridges and overpasses.
