The Pitt Panthers had a 20-point lead over Syracuse at the 10:45 mark of the second half last night but had to hold on at the end to come away with an 84-82 win.
Blake Hinson scored 25 points and pulled down 13 rebounds as Pitt improved to 9-4, and 2-0 in the ACC. Nelly Cummings scored 22 points, with six three-pointers. The Panthers were on cruise control for much of the game, but then they started turning the ball over, losing it 16 times overall, ten times in the second half. Freshman Judah Mintz, who originally committed to Pitt last year, led the Orange with 22 points, but his last ditch shot at the end of the game was an airball to sell the win for the Panthers.
Pitt big man John Hugley, who continues to struggle with a knee injury, sat out his second straight game.
