The daughter of the pioneer of the fishing derby in Clymer is requesting to erect a memorial in his honor.
Each April, the Ed Lucas Kid’s Fishing Derby attracts about 4 to 5 hundred people, about half of which are kids eager to learn and hone their fishing skills. But as Brenda Nichol explains, the derby didn’t begin that way:
“The Moose that used to be here in Clymer, it’s no longer here now, but they wanted a way to draw kids in and to teach them how to fish. And, they kind of wanted my dad to just have kids in a parking lot and cast, and he said ‘That isn’t fishing!’ and so he said ‘If we’re gonna do that, let’s do something right’ and so he just kind of started with – it started small and it’s just grown to like, over 200 kids in the last many years.”
At last night’s borough meeting, Brenda and her husband Larry informed the council of their wish to erect a roughly 8 x 5 foot stone memorial in Edward Lucas’ honor. If approved, the memorial would be dedicated on the day of next year’s derby. The council agreed to discuss the request at the next Committee meeting on September 26th.
Lucas, who passed away in July, was fond of his community:
“He loved kids, and he loved Clymer, and he loved the community. And… he just loved people.”
In other news, Mayor Dennis Clawson reported $636.03 in parking meter revenue and $12 in parking meter fines for August. And, Chief Joseph Douglas reported two retail thefts and one criminal mischief.
