IUP is taking the next step to an ambitious project to replace three buildings with a new math and science building which would open in the spring of 2022. The university is seeking bidders for the replacement of Weyandt and Walsh halls, which are still standing, and for Leonard Hall, which was removed last year. Walsh Hall would be demolished before construction begins, and Weyandt after construction is complete.
The new 100,000 square foot “John J. and Char Kopchick Hall” will be located along Oakland Avenue and will be the home of IUP’s College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics. It will feature a greenhouse, planetarium, and an outdoor garden and classroom area.
The $90 million project will be funded largely through $75 million from IUP’s Imagine Unlimited campaign and $9.4 million from the Foundation for IUP. IUP alumni John and Char Kopchick have contributed $23 million for the project, the largest gift ever to IUP.
The bid documents for this phase lists estimated costs of more than $20 million for general construction, more than $10 million for HVAC, $5-to$6 million for plumbing, and $8-to_10 million for electrical.
Walsh Hall opened in 1960, Weyandt in 1966. Leonard Hall opened in 1953.
