The Westmoreland County Commissioners yesterday approved a contract with Indiana County to house their prison inmates at the Indiana County Jail, should the Westmoreland County facility run out of room. They also approved a similar contract with Greene County.
According to Triblive.com, the deal would pay Indiana County $55 per inmate per day. With so many drug cases filling up prison cells, Westmoreland County’s prison is nearing its capacity of 711 inmates. Compounding their problem, the prison has enough beds for 108 female inmates, but currently has 123, forcing some of them to sleep on cots in a gymnasium.
The Indiana County Jail can hold up to 216 inmates.
