The Pirates were busy on Tuesday at the MLB Winter Meetings in San Diego, signing two veteran pitchers and learning their fate in the 2023 MLB Draft.
One of the signings was LHP Jarlin Garcia, who was signed to a one-year deal worth $2.5 million with a club option for 2023. Garcia spent last season with the San Francisco Giants and went 1-4 with a 3.74 ERA in 65 innings of relief.
The other arm is RHP Vince Velazquez, who was signed to a one-year deal worth $3.15 million. He racked up a 4.78 ERA in 27 games with the Chicago White Sox last season.
Last night was the first ever MLB Draft Lottery and the Pirates were selected to make the first overall pick in next year’s draft. They had a 16.5 percent chance at notching the top pick, along with the Washington Nationals and Detroit Tigers. Those teams earned the Nos. 2 and 3 pick, respectively.
Manager Derek Shelton was also attending the Winter Meetings and spoke to reporters during his media session. One topic Shelton discussed was the first base room. He said he’s excited about working with new faces Carlos Santana and Ji Man Choi.
Shelton also talked about the development of Oneil Cruz. He said he’s impressed with what he’s seen so far.
The Winter Meetings wrap up today with the Rule 5 Draft and the Pirates are expected to make a selection in the early rounds. Meanwhile, they will hope that top prospects Malcom Nunez, Matt Fraiser, Matt Gorski, Tahnaj Thomas, and Blake Sabol are not selected.
