A resolution to allow open alcoholic containers on borough streets for festivals failed to pass last night at the Indiana Borough Council Meeting.
Several issues were brought up with the language of the resolution, with issues ranging from who would be responsible for policing the area where the drinks would be allowed to the borough approving wristbands needed for such events, and changing when the resolution would go into effect, which would have allowed alcoholic beverages out during the Northern Appalachian Folk Festival. Councilman Gerald Smith was the driving force behind the discussion on trying to amend the resolution and get it passed last night. He felt the borough had dropped the ball on the issue.
The motion to pass the open container resolution failed by a 5-4 vote. Council President Peter Broad said that while he’s not against the resolution, it needs to be better organized. Expect the issue to return to the Borough Council in the near future.
Expect the issue to be brought up again in the near future. In other business, plans are still in the works to hold an open house forum on the issue of storm water management and flooding. Council is looking for a date in October to hold that forum.
