Homer City Borough Manager Rob Nymick offered an update on the main street project, and the council approved the purchase of updated radio equipment for the police department.
Nymick said that Main Street will be extended to Alba’s Bar & Grill, but no further due to restrictions by PennDOT. There will be no street lights on this block, but the underground wiring will be installed in case the borough receives a grant in the future to install lighting.
The project is still slated for completion around the end of the month, possibly into the beginning of October. Nymick explained that benches and speed and snow removal signage still need to be installed, as well as the rest of the parking meters. There aren’t enough new parking meters for the whole street however, so some old meters will be painted and restored by the local Arone Auto Body to match the new ones.
Nymick addressed also that concerns have been raised about the height of the parking meters that have already been installed. They will be lowered 4-5 inches in the near future.
In other news, Police Chief Anthony Jellison requested the purchase of Viking VP 400 Portable and VM 600 Mobile radio systems from EF Johnson Technologies for a total of $4220, which will be taken from the K9 fund. Jellison stated that he discovered that the current radio systems aren’t encrypted, and would not communicate with scrambled signals like ones in Westmoreland county. The purchase was approved unanimously.
Lastly, the board voted to update the borough’s stop sign ordinances after Mayor Kal Cecconi brought to attention that they have not been updated since ’93.
