Pennsylvania drivers need to be extra cautious this weekend as the two-week firearms deer season begins, coinciding with the extended bear season. That means a lot of hunters in the woods as early as today, getting their deer stands ready. And it means animals moving out of the woods and onto the roads.
The state Game Commission regulates hunting according to Wildlife Management Units – or “WMUs” – and Indiana County is a part of three different WMUs: 2C, 2D, and 2E. Two of those WMUs have been especially bountiful for buck hunters. 2D, which in Indiana County basically runs east of Route 119, led the state in the last three years with an average of 4.9 bucks taken per square mile. 2E was one of seven others to average over four bucks per square mile (4.4).
Firearm season runs from Saturday through December 10th, with the only non-hunting day being Sunday, December 4th.
Extended bear season runs from Saturday through December 3rd in select WMUs, including 2C. It will run through December 10th in other WMUs, but not in any of Indiana County’s three Wildlife Management Units.
