The struggling Penguins take the ice tonight in Minnesota with a two-game losing streak, but the Wild have dropped two straight as well, and they have lost goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury, who yesterday was placed on injured reserve with an upper body injury suffered in their game Tuesday night. Filip Gustavsson, a 2016 second-round draft pick of the Penguins, will likely start for the Wild.
At 6-7-3, the Penguins are next-to-last in the NHL Metro, but coach Mike Sullivan says he has faith in his team.
Evgeni Malkin is approaching his 1,000th career game. He has played 997, of course all of them as a Penguin. Sullivan says Malkin has an intense competitive fire.
Sullivan appreciates the leadership of his “big three”, Malkin, Sidney Crosby, and Kris Letang. Crosby has played 1,124 games and Letang has played 956.
Crosby was asked yesterday if they’re catching Minnesota at the right time, with the Wild also scuffling for wins.
Crosby admires Malkin’s work ethic as Malkin approaches his 1,000th game.
In Tuesday’s game, Sullivan shuffled his lines, putting Rickard Rakell back on the Crosby line in place of Bryan Rust. Winger Jake Guentzel says the top line will get its act together.
Guentzel says the Pens’ inconsistency has been a problem.
Tonight’s game faces off at eight o’clock. The pregame is at 7 on 92.5 FM U92 and the U92 Sportschannel.
